Do outsiders “get” your mascot?: I hope so. Appalachian – Mountaineers…is it really that hard? Yosef (the official mascot) would kick that Moccasinned pansy from West Virgina’s ass, by the way…
School Fight Song: I can hum the hell out of Hi Hi Yikas, our Fight Song, but as far as lyrics…we all just seem content to say “Go Apps! Fight Apps! Kick Ass!” during the chorus.
Traditions: Our band plays the Olympic Fanfare before each kickoff, and our fans point in the direction they want to go (backward if we’re kicking off, forward if we’re receiving). Don’t know why.
Geographical Features: We’re right smack dab in the Blue Ridge Mountains, at the base of Howard’s Knob (laugh now). There is no better place to watch football on a fall Saturday.
Architectural Features: Hmmm…Aluminum-y Green Roofs…which alot of Alumni hate. Some hippie academic probably decided they were a good idea. There’s a big movement to add more black and gold to campus right now.
Anything else we need to know?: As certain bloggers can attest, there is a solid core of fiercely loyal Alumni at App. True Apps have no room in their hearts for Tar Heels or Blue Devils. (Editor’s note: I learned that Appalachian State is part of the UNC system when I wrote “Who The Hell Are… The Appalachian State Mountaineers” for my other blog. That is the brouhaha my Mountaineer friend is referring to.)

We play the Olympic Fanfare before every kickoff as a part of tradition coming from the 1970’s. There was a kicker here that asked the band to play it and promised that everytime before kickoff he heard it – he would kick it out the back of the endzone. It sort of stuck after he graduated and has been around since.

Just so you know, your queerish mascot couldn’t hold his own with our TRUE MOUNTAINEER from WEST VIRGINIA! Don’t hate us because we play better college football than you. You did beat Michigan, but they couldn’t beat anybody this year, so it wasn’t really that big of an upset. But bring your COPYCAT Mountaineer to WVU, and we will see who holds his own.
Michigan only lost 2 other games all year! One to their rival (Ohio State) and one to the team that was #2 in the nation at one point (Oregon)! Furthermore, Michigan wiped Florida (last years National Champion and team with this year’s Heisman – Tim Tebo) off the map in the bowl game.
You had your chance to get to the Championship…but you blew it!

Facts are facts. ASU beat Michigan. ASU is the ONLY home of the Mountaineers. Not that inbred bunch of hillbillies from West Virginia. When you get a family tree that forks then you can talk. But until then you need to back up the truck. . .or in your case the family mule. Hell, I heard last week that the capital building in West Virginia burned to the axles. And to top it off, a tornado hit the very next day and did $100 million in improvements.
actually, a large portion of WVU’s Mountaineers are from the hills of Jersey and Long Island! But us natural ‘Eers are tired of lame remarks from flat landers. Besides, our mountaineer goes ARMED!
