Website: La Revolucion
Your School: Gonzaga University
Location: Spokane, Washington
School Colors: Blue, Red, White
School Mascot: Bulldogs, Zags
Do outsiders “get” your mascot? Officially it’d be Bulldogs, but to everyone else, it’d be Zags. Zags always get the question, “I love Gin-ZAW-guh, but what is a Zag?” Zags will always answer, “It’s ‘Gone-ZAG-uh,’ jerk.” You would, though, have a hard time getting anyone to dress as a Zag, so for basketball games, a kid wears a Spike the Bulldog suit and Q the live bulldog runs around.
Fight Song: Oh when those brawny bulldogs fall in line/there’s going to be a basket every time!/And we will cheer, cheer, cheer for old GU/Our alma mater sing her praises too./And we will cheer them to another score/We will cheer them, cheer them all the more./For we are the Bulldogs of the blue and white,/Full of fight,/Fight on to victory!
Traditions: The fight song is a hold-over from the football days, which ended in the 1940’s, so it’s not really well known. Yelling “Go, Gonzaga! G-O-N-Z-A-G-A” over and over takes its place pretty well. Also, three bars (whoo-hoo!) sit just across the street from campus, but Jack and Dan’s (owned by Jack Stockton of the Fighting Stocktons) is the most famous. GU coaches eat lunch there once a week, and in the old days, it was common to catch a GU basketball player tending bar. Coincidently, a good amount of underage girls make the trip as well. We’re not all drunks, I swear.
Geographical Features: You mean outside of the sweet Spokane winters? The school sits on the banks of the Spokane river right across from downtown Spokane, and much of the campus has a view of either Mt. Spokane or the downtown skyline. Pine trees abound, and outside of the four-month stretch of drearyness in the winter, GU’s pretty easy on the eyes.
Architectural Features: I’ve got three. St. Aloysius Church has twin spires that serve as the university’s logo and sits on the east end of campus. The Administration Building (photo at left) is the oldest building on campus and sits dead center. The brand new McCarthey Athletic Center sits at the south end, right next to the old Martin Centre.
Any famous alumni? John Stockton, Bing Crosby, Adam Morrison, Tom Foley (former House speaker), Jason Bay (Pittsburgh Pirate), Brian Ching (US World Cupper).
Anything else we should know? Yeah, the name’s “Gone-ZAG-uh.”
