Profile: Wichita State University

December 1, 2008 by Extra P.

Today, we’ll look at a school that probably doesn’t ring a bell with anyone outside the state of Kansas. But it just so happens that I grew up in Wichita, and several of my friends and family attended this fine institution at one time or another. My mother even got her Masters degree there.

Wichita State’s most striking outside aspect is its choice of black and gold as school colors. Slap those hues on their unique mascot Wushock (he’s a shock of wheat!!! beat that!!!), and you have something special. WSU did away with football decades ago, but have top-notch collegiate baseball and bowling teams. The basketball team frequently challenges for the Missouri Valley Conference title, but the school has a hard time holding on to great coaches, who often use the lesser-known school as a stepping stone to bigger conferences and bigger paydays.

Then again, spending a few years at a school in hopes of getting a great job is what most of us do, so who are we to judge? Let’s look at Wichita State.

School: Wichita State Universitywushock

Location: Wichita, KS

Website: This is Wichita State

How to apply: Office of Admissions

IntriguingĀ Degree Programs: Midwest Student Exchange Program (offers reduced tuition to students from several midwestern states), Entrepreneurship (geared toward growing local start-ups and small businesses), Physician Assistant (a growing field that fills the gap between Nursing and full Med School), Forensic Science (for those who picture themselves in the CSI lab coat).

Professional Schools: W. Frank Barton School of Business, WSU College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Health Professions, College of Fine Arts

Princeton Review Says: Wichita State Profile

Successful Graduates: A short list of WSU alums, including Pizza Hut co-founder Frank Carney, opera star Samuel Ramey, Super Bowl winning coach Bill Parcells, and Broadway actress Karla Burns.

Check Out: Student journals – several students update online blogs that detail daily life at WSU. Recent subjects include Harlan casting his first presidential vote ever, and Breanne’s post-holiday bargain hunting.

Hope you enjoyed this College Rule entry. If you’re a recent college grad, or getting ready to graduate soon, good luck with your online job search. With a new administration coming into power, government jobs, should prove to be a growing niche you can find your way into.
